Vinyl Record Painting Ideas: 10 Designs to Inspire You

4 min read

Got a vinyl record ready to paint but absolutely no idea what to put on it?

You’re not alone.

One of the hardest parts of any creative project is deciding what to make. The good news is that vinyl records are surprisingly fun to design — the circular shape, black background and connection to music give you plenty to work with.

Whether you're joining a vinyl record painting workshop or trying it yourself at home, here are 10 vinyl record painting ideas to get you started.

1. Your Favourite Album

Start with the obvious: music.

Take inspiration from an album you love without necessarily recreating the entire cover. Borrow its colours, symbols or overall mood and turn them into your own design.

You could also choose an album connected to a particular memory or period of your life to make the finished piece more personal.

2. A Favourite Lyric

Sometimes a few words are all you need.

Choose a lyric that means something to you and make it the centre of your vinyl design. Add small illustrations, stars, flowers or simple patterns around it to fill the circular space.

Just remember that painting tiny letters can be tricky, so bigger and bolder usually works better.

3. Retro Florals

Flowers and vinyl records just work.

Try colourful daisies, little wildflowers, vines around the edge or one oversized flower in the centre.

The black vinyl background can make brighter colours stand out beautifully, and floral designs can be as simple or detailed as you like.

4. Sunset or Landscape

Turn the round shape of the record into a tiny window to somewhere else.

Paint a sunset over the ocean, mountains, clouds or a dreamy night sky.

You don't need to make it realistic either. A few simple shapes and a limited colour palette can create a really effective landscape.

5. Something Cute

Sometimes you just want to paint something that makes you smile.

Cats, dogs, bears, frogs, food, little characters — pretty much anything can become a vinyl design.

Simple illustrations with bold outlines are particularly beginner-friendly and tend to stand out well against the dark surface.

6. Abstract Shapes and Colours

No drawing skills? Perfect.

Abstract vinyl painting is one of the easiest ways to create something that still looks intentional.

Experiment with wavy lines, checkerboards, blobs, swirls, contrasting colours or repeating patterns.

There's no right or wrong way to do it, which makes this a great choice if you're painting a vinyl record for the first time.

7. A Memory From a Trip

Turn a favourite memory into something you can hang on your wall.

It could be a beach from your last holiday, a city skyline, a tiny illustration of somewhere you've visited or even just colours that remind you of a particular place.

Pair it with a song you listened to during the trip and suddenly the artwork tells a much bigger story.

8. Matching Vinyls With Someone

Coming to a workshop with your partner or best friend? Create a pair.

You could paint two halves of the same image, use matching colour palettes or create completely different designs connected by one small detail.

Another idea is to secretly design a vinyl inspired by each other and reveal them at the end.

9. Minimalist Line Art

Your vinyl doesn't need to be completely covered in paint.

Simple line drawings, small flowers, stars, faces or a single central illustration can look especially striking against the original black record.

If your style is more minimal, leaving some of the vinyl exposed can become part of the design itself.

10. Paint a Song

Instead of painting something first and choosing music afterwards, start with the song.

Listen to your favourite track and think about the colours, images or feelings it brings to mind.

Then turn those ideas into your artwork.

At DREAMIE's Vinyl Record Painting Workshop in Sydney, you can also add an NFC sticker linked to a song of your choice. Tap your phone against the finished piece and your chosen song can open on your device.

It means your vinyl doesn't just represent the song — it can actually connect you back to it.

Tips for Choosing Your Vinyl Painting Design

If you're stuck between ideas, don't overcomplicate it.

For your first vinyl painting, designs with larger shapes, bold colours and fewer tiny details are usually easier to work with.

You can also save a few reference images before you start and combine elements you like rather than trying to copy one design exactly.

Most importantly, choose something you actually like. Your finished vinyl is going home with you, after all.

Ready to Paint Your Own?

Hopefully you're now looking at a blank vinyl record with a few more ideas than you started with.

Whether you go for flowers, your favourite album, a travel memory or something completely random, there's no single way a painted vinyl record is supposed to look.

If you'd rather create yours with everything already prepared for you, DREAMIE offers a beginner-friendly Vinyl Record Painting Workshop in Sydney CBD where you can design, paint and personalise your own record.

Bring your idea — or arrive with absolutely no idea at all.

We'll take it from there.
